Eircom has signed a EUR10 million deal with Tesco Ireland that will see the telecoms firm roll out a next-generation network for the retailer.
As part of the five-year deal Eircom will implement the next-generation network, which is based on its MPLS (multi protocol label switching) platform -- Business IP -- across Tesco's 110 retail and distribution sites around the country. The network will also connect all these sites with Tesco Ireland's head office and will integrate with the retailer's global IP platform in the UK.
Eircom will also be the exclusive supplier of data and voice telecommunications services to Tesco and will move the retailer's existing systems onto a single IP network.
With the next-generation network Tesco's current capacity will be quadrupled, which means the retailer will be able to roll out a range of communications tools for staff and customers, which could include in-store information kiosks, video conferencing technology and VoIP (voice over internet protocol).
Eircom was awarded the lucrative contract with Tesco following a competitive tender process, which formed part of a global procurement process for the retailer.
In May telecoms firm Cable & Wireless announced that it had secured a EUR125 million contract with Tesco in the UK. This deal is similar in nature to the contract between Tesco Ireland and Eircom.
