Worldwide PC shipments fall in the first quarter | Microsoft announces the launch of the International eBook Association
Xilinx has exceeded market expectations with pro-forma revenues of USD273.5 million for the fourth financial quarter to 30 March 2002, a 20 percent increase over the previous quarter. Fourth quarter pro-forma profit was USD43.4 million or on a GAAP accounting basis, USD34.2 million. For the full 2002 financial year, Xilinx reported a 39 percent decline in annual revenues to USD1.02 billion, and net income was down 34 percent to USD43.4 million, or USD0.12 per share, over the year-earlier period. However the company anticipates stronger sales and further revenue increases over the next two quarters.
Sun Microsystems reported revenues for the third quarter of USD3.1 billion, compared with USD3.1 billion in revenues reported for the second quarter of fiscal year 2002. Net loss for the third quarter was USD26 million and the net loss per share was USD.01, a sequential improvement of 67 percent over the net loss per share reported for the second quarter of fiscal year 2002. In the 2002 fiscal third quarter, special items increased the net loss by USD11 million, resulting in a GAAP net loss of USD37 million and GAAP net loss per share of USD.01. The company also said it was to cut 1,000 jobs, mostly by attrition, and a spokesman said no impact is expected in Ireland.
Worldwide PC shipments declined slightly in the first quarter of 2002, reflecting continued pressure on the market according to market research firm IDC. Shipments were down 2.7 percent year on year and 8.9 percent sequentially to a total of 31.4 million. Market growth was up relative to a projected decline of 5.4 percent year on year, consistent with a slowly recovering market.

Rising volume production and the scramble for leadership in the Bluetooth semiconductor market have resulted in plummeting chipset prices, standing at an average of around USD15 in 2001, down from over USD25 the previous year, according to research by Frost & Sullivan. The company estimates that 9.23 million chipset solutions were shipped in 2001, generating revenues in excess of USD138 million. Frost & Sullivan forecasts an extremely optimistic outlook for the Bluetooth semiconductor market, with chipset shipments rising from 9.23 million in 2001 to over 971 million chipsets per annum in 2006.
