Vivendi discovers shareholder e-voting problems | Dot.com job cuts fall below 1,000
Nokia and Hutchison 3G Austria GmbH have signed a contract for the supply of Hutchison's 3G network in Austria. Under the agreement, Nokia will supply its 3G core-network equipment, as well as operations and support service for the core network and implementation and maintenance services. In addition to network equipment, Nokia will provide its network deployment package, which covers implementation and project management and the Nokia KeyCare Package to maintain the competitiveness of the network.
StorageTek has opened a subsidiary in Blackrock, Co. Dublin and will establish its sales, technical systems engineering, software development and business services teams there.
ANCR Corporation on Monday announced a pilot project in Denmark enabling consumers to obtain cash from a traditional ATM using a mobile phone. The consumer is able to initiate the transaction process prior to approaching the ATM, choosing the transaction type, amount and account details. At the ATM, the consumer enters the security personal identification number into the mobile phone and the transaction details are transmitted to the ATM.
Nokia Home Communications has begun negotiations with personnel representatives about the possible closure of its Linkoping operations in Sweden. The site has 180 employees. The aim of the current operational review is to identify further operational efficiencies, and at the same time support the Linkoping employees during the negotiation process.
Following the Vivendi Universal shareholders meeting on 24 April, the company revealed a number of abnormalities in the e-voting system. The company said that for each of the 19 resolutions, there was an abnormally high abstention rate in the order of more than 20 percent of the total votes cast, and the number of shareholders present in the room represented about 20 percent of the votes cast. In other words, the review revealed that the electronic votes cast by the shareholders present with the largest number of votes were all systematically recorded as abstentions. More generally, this incident could throw suspicion on other shareholders' meetings currently using electronic voting.

According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, dot.com job cuts fell below 1,000, as Internet firms announced 824 job cuts in April, down 47 percent from 1,549 in March. April 2002 was lower by 95 percent from a dot.com job-cutting peak of 17,554 recorded in April last year. The April figure brings announced dot.com job cuts for the year to 4,845.
