Using the subject line to get noticed

Denise Cox argues that to get results you have to make every word work in a subject line. While your recognition factor with subscribers and reputation for providing prior value play key roles in getting opened; it is the subject line that is a major influence in an open this time.

Tips for your subject line:

Be clear and incentivise – Be informative rather than too clever. Note special offers, time limits, new information or downloads available to be found inside the email.

Key words first – Though you have up to 70 characters to play around with, it’s really only the first 35 or so that will definitely show in many platforms (and less in handhelds). Make those first few words you use the most impactful ones.

Test before sending – Test two subject lines to a small group of your subscribers, try short and long, different offers, etc. Send the winning subject line to the remainder of your list.
